Can We All Please Just Reach a Little Maturity? Those soldiers in Iraq who were abusing prisoners are, well, I just can't think of a good word. Damned vocabulary. I have two thoughts about them. 1. I keep reading that the problem is that they weren't trained and supervised enough. Gee, I'm glad that I don't need a supervisor or proper training to keep me from beating and humiliating people, at least now that I'm not two years old. I understand that if you perceive these people as the enemy that you might feel extreme animosity towards them, especially if they killed your friend in battle, but as adults (not two year olds) the goal is always to be ruled by what's right, not by your emotions. 2. Another problem is that we take soldiers and train them to be able to kill others. In doing so we ask them to cut themselves off from the part of their humanity that would revile the murder. Then, we ask these same people to guard those they were trained to kill. Never, in any war, has there been an absence of prisoner abuse. After all, it hardly makes sense to say, you can kill people sometimes, and not let it get you down, but you can never ever beat them or you are a terrible person. Huh? I think I may have an oral topic! This is such a huge relief. Now I just need to devise the experiment, which will be more my speed. Ahh... I'm not wearing a bra today. Why should I always have to wear a bra? Don't imprison my breasts! They want to be freeeeee! |
